Have you ever gone to a doctor and you
were misdiagnosed?
It happens more than you'd think.
When it comes to horses, you'd be flabbergasted how
often it happens. It's surprising how few people
train a horse and fix behavior issues.
When you address the behavior issues,
it gets easier to learn horse training problem
solving.
Here's what I mean.
Let's say your horse bucks.
Now the thing to do is analyze why.
If you think it through, you may figure it out.
But if you decide on a reason and it's not
right...guess what?
You're fixing the wrong thing.
And what's bad about that is you could be making
things worse.
Here's an example.
If I have a horse that bucks, I know there are
basically three reasons for it.
One is fear.
The other is pain.
The third is that some horses just can't get over
having us predators on their backs.
If it's fear, that's not too hard to discover.
If you look for the fear signs such as a raised head,
tensing body, big eyes, skittishness, etc., it will
help you make the assessment.
But what if it's pain?
There are things to look for.
I can't possibly tell what to look for in an email,
but I can tell you this.
If it's pain causing the bucking but the rider thinks
it's a behavior thing and tries to correct the
behavior - you're asking for trouble.
It's like a doctor prescribing Tylenol for a headache
when the patient really has a brain tumor.
Ok...it's not necessarily THAT serious, but
it "could" be.
So what am I getting at?
Pain.
A sudden misbehavior would make me first look for some
kind of pain.
If the horse is in pain, it could manifest in not
wanting to be caught, bridled, kicking, and more.
Just think about when you're in pain. Do you like it
when someone messes with you?
I don't.
I just want to be left alone.
Thus, my behavior is different than when
I'm feeling good.
Do you see?
Now the question is this. How do you know what to look
for.
AH....good question.
Answer - learn.
Study about it. Learn about it. Know the signs, etc.
Just yesterday, I was working with a pro horse trainer
and we filmed an entire video on pain for Super
Stars of Horse Training.
The pain issue is enormously important yet it's so
often overlooked by most horse owners.
If you're a member of Super Stars of Horse Training,
you'll be getting it soon. You'll have a much greater
insight and understanding of what to do and what to
look for.
If you're not a member, I suggest you get some books,
do some research and learn all you can about it.
Knowledge is POWER!
