Does your horse know his own strength?
If so, that's not a good thing.
Here's what I mean. We want to teach horses by
pressure and release training. Thus, we will use
horse trainer pressure and release methods. It's
likely the biggest horse training principle there is.
If we're not aware of it, we can actually teach a
horse to realize his own strength and work him against
us.
For instance, if a rider uses constant pressure with
the reins, the horse will learn to lean into that
pressure.
You've likely heard how important it is to give when
the horse gives...this is why.
Horse training secret #3 I wrote a few days ago
revealed this crucial info- and that is that horses
are an "into pressure" animals.
It's instinctual for them to lean against pressure and
they have to be taught to yield to it.
Anyway, if there's constant pressure from the rein the
horse will learn to lean on it.
The problem is that if he learns to do that and there
comes a day when you need to pull his head around for
stopping, chances are not good you'll be able to.
Even if he had a harsher bit in his mouth and you
still pulled, he can out-pull you. Horses have amazing
pain tolerance and you simply can't win.
This reveals the importance of teaching your horse to
yield to pressure. The least amount of pressure they
yield to is even better yet.
